A balanced literacy program entails a combination of reading and writing activities.  A list of activities we do in our rooms include: Morning Message:  language and writing skills are modeled calendar is also done here Guided Reading / Literacy Centers:  students break into literacy centers where they interact with reading and writing opportunities while the teacher meets with the students according to their academic needs Read Alouds:  teacher reads to students while students follow along / teacher may stop to discuss focal points Writers Workshop:  students learn the writing process and developmental skills needed in order to write stories effectively Phonemic Awareness:  skill of listening to how sounds make words
